Summit K - 9: Message from Principal

September 03, 2020

Good afternoon,

I wanted to connect with you to let you know that we are in the process of expanding Summit Learning Centre's program in order to best serve our community. For those of you who have already submitted your registration forms, you should be contacted in the next 2 - 3 weeks to set up the Student Learning Plan meeting; this meeting is required to complete the registration process.  For those of you who are undecided about what course of action to take, my hope is that the information below can answer some of your questions.

Summit at Silverdale is a Kindergarten to grade 9 Distributed Learning program where we provide a flexible, self-paced, and personalized learning model for families who choose to complete their education outside of the regular school setting.  Our highly skilled educational team provide a caring and supportive learning environment as we partner with your family in implementing the BC school curriculum. As with all schools, Summit offers learning support, support from Educational Assistants, as well as support for our Indigenous students.

In the first two weeks following your S.L.P. meeting you will be required to complete a number of assignments to secure your position in the program. For students who regularly attend Mission Public Schools, for you to retain your current spot at your school you are required to meet the active engagement requirements which will be explained to you during the S.L.P. meeting.  Our team is here to support you every step of the way by offering assessment feedback, providing guidance and direction in courses, helping with accountability if there is a lag in handing in assignments, as well as making adjustments to the S.L.P. as needed.

Distributed Learning is not "Hybrid Learning".  You can expect 4-5 hours of school work per day for your student depending on their skill level as well as their level of independence. Teachers in D.L. act as a resource to you as the at home facilitator. They will be actively involved in assessing and giving feedback on learning, making adjustments to the learning plan, and offering support to parents as they work with their kids.

If you are interested in coming to Summit Learning Centre this year, please fill in the registrations. K-6 Registration Form or 7-9 Registration Form.

Completed registration forms can be sent to: summit.register@MPSD.CA.

Have a great rest of your day,

Rob Clark

Principal, Summit K-9
